Animated documentaries have been in existence since the 1920s. In FOMACS we have coined the term ‘documation’ to describe the creative and political interface between animation and documentary. The combination of the two allows us to represent experiences and identities which cannot be easily shown on the screen.
Animation provides critical distance from oftentimes sensitive issues, enabling the translation of real life stories and case studies without revealing the identities of the people behind the stories.
Our three-part animation series ‘Abbi’s Circle’ focuses on immigrant ‘family reunification’ and foregrounds the voices of children. Visit the project page to see full details of this animation and the learning resources that have been developed for the primary school sector.
A forthcoming documentary film ‘Union, Ink and Paper’ uses animation to highlight stories about undocumented workers, leading the viewer into spaces and situations seldom seen or heard.
Another project that is currently in pre-production works with ‘documation’ to explore the different stages of the asylum process. This will go into production in August 2009.
We'll keep you posted on the progress of these projects.
